There are two systems on an electronically controlled door and they fail differently, so it is worth knowing which one you have.
The control side โ the reader, the controller, the wiring, the credential database, the power supply feeding all of it โ is an electronic system. When a reader stops reading or a controller loses its configuration, that is where the fault sits, and no commercial lock repair at the door will change it.
The lock side โ the electric strike, the maglock, the mechanical lock behind it, the door, the frame and the keep โ is physical hardware. A strike that has burned out, a maglock that is holding when it should release, or a mechanical override cylinder that has seized are all straightforwardly ours, and they sit alongside our access control work rather than apart from it.

Every Controlled Door Needs a Mechanical Fallback
This is the practical lesson from almost every access control failure we attend, and it is cheap to act on in advance.
A door that can only be opened by a working reader, a working controller and a working power supply has three single points of failure and no answer when any of them stops. That is fine in a building with a manned reception during working hours and genuinely not fine at six in the morning.
A mechanical override โ a keyed cylinder that operates the lock directly, with keys held by named people and recorded โ turns a whole-morning outage into a two-minute inconvenience. The Alarm and the Access System Are Not the Same Thing
These get conflated constantly and the distinction matters a great deal at the point of a lockout.
The alarm detects and reports. The access system decides who may open a door. They are frequently supplied by the same company and are frequently interlocked, but they are separate systems with separate failure modes.
The practical consequence is that opening a door mechanically may resolve the access problem and simultaneously create an alarm problem, because the system was expecting a valid credential and did not get one โ the reason every emergency locksmith call at controlled premises settles the alarm before the door.

How a Controlled-Door Call Runs

The Chain Somebody Added to the Fire Exit
Panic hardware on a fire exit is designed around one requirement: it opens from the inside, always, without a key, under pressure from somebody who is not thinking clearly.
That is also precisely why it gets defeated. A fire door that opens freely from the inside is a door staff can use as a shortcut, a door that gets propped for a smoke break, and a door that somebody eventually walks in through. The response, in a very large number of premises, is a chain and a padlock added by whoever got tired of it.
It solves the problem it was aimed at and creates a considerably worse one. A chained fire exit is not a security measure with a side effect. It is an exit that does not exist, in a building where people are told it does.
The correct answer is hardware rather than chain. Panic hardware with an alarm on it, or a monitored contact, means the door still opens instantly from the inside and anybody using it as a shortcut is immediately obvious. That removes the reason the chain was reached for.
