A Stiff Lock in Sandton Feels Finished and Usually Is Not
A lock that has become hard work feels finished. In a large share of the Sandton homes we attend it is not โ it is dry, full of grit, or being asked to do a job that belongs to the door. Our locksmith for lock repair visits start with a diagnosis rather than a quote for exactly that reason.
Locks are mechanical assemblies with fine tolerances and they collect dust, old lubricant and debris for years without anybody opening them. A mechanism that has never been serviced is not worn out; it is neglected, and those are different conditions with different answers.
There is also a thirty-second test you can run before anybody quotes you, which separates two very differently priced jobs. This page covers that, what a repair actually involves, and the three situations where a repair genuinely will not hold.
Lock gone stiff rather than dead?
That is the cheap moment. Call before it seizes entirely โ a mechanism that still turns can usually be recovered, and one that has stopped usually cannot.
Why Sandton Properties Postpone This Longest
There is a pattern to when repair calls come in here, and it is not about the hardware.
A Sandton property typically has five or six locking points, and only one or two get used daily. The front door, and whichever door leads to the parking. The scullery door, the garage side door, the slider and the gates are used occasionally, by somebody who is usually in a hurry, and a stiff key on any of those gets worked around rather than reported.
By the time somebody mentions it, that lock has frequently been stiff for a year. The window in which a strip and reset would have restored it fully has closed, and what could have been a service becomes a locksmith for lock change on a door nobody thinks about until it strands them.
The other pattern is domestic staff and gardeners. They use the gates and the scullery door many times more often than the household does, and they notice a mechanism stiffening months before anybody else. Asking directly โ which of these is getting hard to turn โ surfaces more than any inspection, and it is free. Our residential locksmith in Sandton visits walk every entry point for exactly that reason.
What a Repair Actually Involves
On a cylinder: dismantling, clearing the accumulated grit and hardened lubricant, inspecting the components for genuine wear, and reassembling with the correct lubricant.
On a mortise or lever case: the same, with more to go wrong and more to gain. These were designed to be serviced and most never have been, which is why they recover so well.
On alignment: adjusting the keep or strike so the bolts meet it squarely. That needs no new parts at all and it addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
Household oils are worth naming separately. They are the commonest reason a lock seizes a few months after somebody tried to help it โ oil and general-purpose spray attract dust into a mechanism already full of it. Gate mechanisms are a specific case covered by our locksmith for gate locks work, because outdoor hardware collects far more of everything.
What Sandton Households Call About
Six ways a lock tells you it is in trouble, and what each one usually turns out to be once it is opened.
It only works at one angle
The key has to be held a particular way before it will turn. Wear inside the cylinder, and the point at which a strip and reset still restores it.
Fine indoors, bad on cold mornings
A mechanism that has tightened enough that temperature decides whether it works. It will not get better on its own once it starts.
Locks, but the door has to be shouldered
Almost always the door or frame rather than the lock. Replacing the cylinder here changes nothing and the fault returns within weeks.
The key turns and nothing engages
The cam or follower has stopped driving the bolt. The door feels locked and is not, which is the version worth treating as urgent.
Somebody put oil or grease in it
Oil holds dust and turns to grinding paste. It buys a week and costs the mechanism. Strip, clean and correct lubricant is the actual fix.
Gate lock stiff after a wet spell
Outdoor hardware carrying weather and cycle count. Frequently repairable, and frequently the wrong cylinder for outdoor use in the first place.
How a Sandton Repair Call-Out Runs
The diagnosis comes first, and it is the part that decides whether you are buying a repair or a replacement you do not need.
- Step 1
The door is worked before the lock is touched
Opened, closed and locked with the key in hand. Half of these calls are a door that has moved, and that shows up in thirty seconds.
- Step 2
The lock comes off and gets opened
Nothing is diagnosed from the outside of a cylinder. Wear, contamination and damage are three different faults with three different answers.
- Step 3
You are told which of the three it is
Including when the honest answer is that a repair will not hold. We say that rather than fitting one and returning in a month.
- Step 4
The work happens on the same visit
Stripped, cleaned, worn parts replaced and correctly lubricated. Mobile service, so it is done at your address rather than taken away.
- Step 5
Tested with the door shut, repeatedly
The failure you called about happened with the door closed. That is the only state worth testing in, and it is where the keep gets adjusted.
Not sure whether it is the lock or the door?
Run the thirty-second test and tell us the answer on the phone. It narrows the job before anybody is dispatched.
When a Repair Will Not Hold
Three situations, and taking a repair job in any of them would be doing you a disservice.
The lock has been forced. Gripped, drilled or levered, its internals are strained even where the key still turns, and servicing it returns a compromised component to duty on the one door somebody has already chosen. That is always a locksmith for lock replacement rather than a service.
The hardware is too weak for its door. A light domestic cylinder on a door taking heavy daily use will keep failing however well it is maintained, because the fault is the specification rather than the condition. Repeated repairs there cost more within a year than one upgrade.
Or the mechanism is worn past the point a service holds. On hardware that has done thirty or forty years, components have lost their tolerances and cleaning restores function for months rather than years. That judgement is made with the lock open rather than from the doorway, and where it applies our residential locksmith Sandton team says so plainly.
The Warnings That Run for Weeks Before a Failure
Almost every lock we are eventually asked to replace gave months of notice, and the notice is consistent enough to write down.
The key needs a wiggle. Then it works only at a particular angle. Then it takes two or three attempts on a cold morning. Then one day it does not turn at all โ and by definition that happens when somebody is trying to leave or trying to get in, which is the most expensive moment available.
There is a second warning people miss entirely because it does not involve the key. A door that has started needing a slight lift on the handle before it closes, or one that has to be pulled towards you while the key turns, is telling you the leaf has moved in its frame. The lock is fine and it is being asked to hold something that no longer arrives in the same place twice.
Every stage before the last is cheap. A mechanism that is stiff but still turning can be stripped, cleared and reset for a fraction of what replacing it costs. Once it has seized entirely that window closes, and on a Sandton front door it closes with somebody standing outside โ which becomes a locksmith for home lockout callout at whatever hour it happens.
The same progression runs on gate hardware, only faster, because outdoor mechanisms collect far more of everything. And it runs on vehicles too โ a stiff ignition barrel warns in exactly the same way, which our locksmith for ignition repair page sets out. The pattern is the same wherever a mechanism is used daily and never opened up.
How a Repair Visit Works
Operating commitments rather than claims, each visible during the job itself.
Where a repair genuinely will not hold, that is said plainly rather than attempted and charged for twice. The van carries the common cylinders so a replacement happens on the same visit.

A multi-point door โ one handle that throws bolts at the top, the middle and the bottom โ is a genuinely better door, and it fails in ways a single deadlock does not.
The first thing to understand is that lifting the handle is not a formality. On most of these doors the handle engages the bolts and the key then locks them in position. A household that has got into the habit of turning the key without fully lifting the handle is locking one point rather than three, which looks identical from outside and is a completely different door.
The second is that the failure point is usually the gearbox in the middle of the mechanism, not any of the bolts. When the handle goes heavy, or has to be lifted twice, or springs back without engaging, that is the gearbox announcing itself โ typically over weeks. It is a repairable component on many doors, and a replacement on others, but it is very rarely a reason to replace the whole door.
The third is that alignment matters more here than on a simple lock, because three bolts have to meet three keeps simultaneously. A door that has dropped a couple of millimetres will engage the middle point and fight the other two, and the household will experience that as a stiff handle rather than as a door that has sagged.
The practical advice is the same in every case: a handle that has become heavy is a warning with weeks of notice on it, and it is much cheaper attended to then. That is exactly what a locksmith for lock repair in Sandton visit is for.
Timber, Aluminium and Steel Age Differently
Most repair diagnosis comes down to knowing what the door is made of, because the three common materials fail in entirely different ways and on different timescales.
Timber moves. It takes up moisture through a wet season and gives it back through a dry one, so the door is fractionally larger in February than in August, and it carries its own weight on hinges that eventually sag. The classic timber symptom is seasonal: the door that only sticks at one time of year, and the key that turns freely open and fights closed. The lock is almost always innocent.
Aluminium does not move with moisture but it does move with temperature, and more importantly it drops. A sliding or stacking door runs on rollers that wear, and a few millimetres of drop stops a marginal catch engaging cleanly. The classic aluminium symptom is a door that has to be lifted slightly to lock โ which households normalise as a technique rather than reading as wear.
Steel โ security gates, burglar bars, gate frames โ barely changes at all, which is exactly what misleads people. The steel outlasts the lock in it by decades, so households look at a sound gate and assume the assembly is sound. The lock inside it is a small mechanism with tight clearances living outdoors, and it reaches the end of its life long before the frame does.
Knowing which of the three you are standing in front of narrows the diagnosis before the mechanism is even opened, and it is why describing the door matters as much as describing the fault when you call.
