The Lock That Works Hardest Is Rarely the Front Door
The lock people think about is the front door. The lock that actually works hardest on most properties our residential locksmith team visits is on a gate, and it is almost always the one specified with the least thought.
It sits outdoors permanently, taking sun, rain and dust with nothing sheltering it. It is opened more often than the front door because everyone uses it β residents, deliveries, domestic staff, gardeners. And it is frequently fitted with a cylinder chosen because it was in the van, not because it suited the application.
Put those together and early failure is not bad luck. It is the predictable result of an interior-grade fitting doing an exterior job, and this page covers what that actually does to the mechanism, how to tell a gate problem from a lock problem, and the one avoidable mistake that seizes more gate locks than weather does.
Gate key gone stiff?
That is the cheap moment. Call before it seizes entirely β a mechanism that still turns can usually be recovered, and one that has stopped usually cannot.
What Outdoors Actually Does to a Cylinder
A gate cylinder fails differently from a door cylinder, and understanding how makes the specification decision obvious.
The first factor is water. A vertical keyway on an exposed gate takes rain directly, and it carries dust in with it. Inside the cylinder that becomes an abrasive paste in the pin chambers, and the springs corrode from the bottom up because the water sits there rather than draining.
The second is thermal cycling. Highveld daytime sun on a steel gate and a cold night, every day for years, expands and contracts a mechanism with fractions-of-a-millimetre tolerances. Components that would sit stable indoors work themselves out of alignment.
The third is simply use. A pedestrian gate is opened by everybody who comes to the property, which on a family home is several times what the front door sees. Multiply that by weather and it is why a gate cylinder frequently fails in a third of the time an identical one lasts indoors β the pattern our locksmith for lock repair page treats as normal wear rather than a fault.
The Gate Itself Is Often the Culprit
A lock cannot hold a gate that has stopped sitting square, and a great many gate-lock failures are actually gate failures.
Sliding gates drop on their wheels or the track fouls with grit, so the gate is no longer arriving in the same place twice. Swing gates sag on their hinges, particularly heavy steel ones, with the same result. The lock is then asked to hold something that has moved, and it starts binding.
The tell is simple and anybody can check it in seconds: if the gate has to be lifted, pushed or pulled before the lock will engage, the fault is the gate.
Fitting a new lock to that gate buys a few months. Correcting the alignment fixes it, and it needs no new hardware at all. Our locksmith for lock change in Fourways visits say which one you are dealing with rather than selling hardware that will bind again by winter.
What Gate Calls Are Actually About
Six situations covering most gate hardware work, and what each one actually needs.
Key stiffening over weeks
Water, dust and thermal cycling doing their work. Recoverable while it still turns, and frequently not once it has stopped entirely.
Gate has to be lifted to lock
The gate has dropped or the track has fouled. That is alignment rather than hardware, and new hardware there binds within months.
Lock seized after painting
Paint in the mechanism, almost certainly. It seizes a gate lock far faster than weather does and it is completely preventable.
Motorised gate fighting its lock
A latch that catches as the drive runs means the motor pushes against it every cycle. Whichever fails first gets blamed, and neither caused it.
Interior cylinder fitted outdoors
A specification fault with one answer. It will keep failing however carefully it is maintained, because the fault is not condition.
Trellis or concertina door binding
Runs on a track top and bottom. Grit in the track stops it closing to the same point, so the latch no longer meets its keep.
Paint: the Failure Nobody Expects
There is one avoidable cause worth naming separately because it is so common and so cheap to prevent.
A gate gets repainted. Nobody masks the lock, because nobody thinks of a lock as something paint could hurt. Paint runs into the keyway, into the latch mechanism, and into the gap between the cylinder and the housing, and then it cures.
A mechanism that would have survived another decade of weather seizes within a season or two, and the owner reasonably concludes the hardware was poor quality. It was not β it was painted shut.
Masking the lock before painting takes moments and it is worth mentioning to whoever does the gate next. Where one has already been painted shut it can frequently be stripped and recovered rather than replaced, which is far cheaper β our locksmith for lock repair in Randburg work recovers these regularly on older properties.
How a Gate Visit Runs
Five steps, and the first two are about the gate rather than the lock. That ordering is where the savings sit.
- Step 1
The gate is checked for alignment
Wheels, track, hinges and how it sits closed. If it has to be lifted before the lock engages, no hardware decision matters until that is corrected.
- Step 2
The mechanism is opened up
Water damage, corroded springs and abrasive paste look different from genuine wear. Which of those it is decides whether a service will hold.
- Step 3
The specification is checked
Whether what is fitted was ever rated for outdoors. An interior cylinder on a gate is a specification fault with only one answer.
- Step 4
Repaired or replaced accordingly
Stripped, cleared and relubricated where it will hold. Outdoor-rated hardware sized for weight and cycle count where it will not.
- Step 5
Tested through a full cycle
Locked and unlocked with the gate closed, and on a motorised gate, checked against the drive so the two are not fighting each other.
Gate needing a lift before it locks?
That is the gate rather than the lock, and correcting it needs no new hardware. Call and describe what it is doing.
Specifying Gate Hardware Properly
Where a replacement is genuinely needed, five things decide whether it lasts five years or one.
- Outdoor rating, not appearance
- Weather sealing and corrosion resistance rather than finish. An interior-grade cylinder on a gate is a guaranteed early failure whatever it cost.
- Sized for the gate's weight
- A heavy steel driveway gate loads its lock differently from a light pedestrian one. Hardware chosen for the wrong weight wears out of alignment.
- Sized for the cycle count
- The gate everybody uses needs a mechanism rated for it. That is the single biggest difference between hardware that lasts and hardware that comes back.
- Compatible with the drive, if motorised
- The lock and the motor have to agree. A fitting that fights the drive fails regardless of quality, and it takes the gearbox with it.
- Keyed deliberately
- Whether the gate shares a key with the house is worth deciding rather than defaulting. Perimeter access without house access is a real requirement for some households.
How the Visit Works
Operating commitments rather than claims, each visible during the job itself.
Every key produced during the visit is handed to you at the end of it, and no record of any key is kept β on a gate or on a whole property.
Read the reviews on our Google Business ProfileThe Manual Override and Where Its Key Lives
Every automated gate has a manual release, and it exists for exactly one situation: the power is off and the motor is not going to move the gate.
In practice the release key is in a kitchen drawer, or it went with the previous owner, or it is on the bunch currently locked inside the house. The one moment it is needed is reliably the one moment nobody can produce it β and by then there is usually a vehicle on the wrong side of a heavy gate.
Finding it, operating it once and agreeing where it lives is a five-minute job on an ordinary afternoon. Doing the same thing in the dark during an outage, with a car in the road, is a different experience entirely and frequently becomes a callout for something that was never a fault.
Where the release mechanism itself has seized β and it does, because it is outdoor hardware operated roughly once a year β it is usually serviceable rather than replaceable, and it does not require the motor to be touched at all.
It is worth separating clearly from automation work: if the motor runs and the gate does not move, that belongs with a gate company. The lock, the pedestrian gate and the override are locksmith work. See emergency locksmith for what happens when it is discovered at the wrong hour.

Why Gate Locks Need a Different Fix
A gate lock can fail in ways that a standard interior door lock never does. Outdoor exposure, misaligned hinges, swollen timber, loose metalwork, and repeated slamming can all turn a working system into a faulty gate lock that jams, scrapes, or refuses to latch. That is why gate lock repair is often about more than forcing a mechanism back into place; it may require careful adjustment of the latch, strike, handle alignment, or the gate itself so the hardware can engage cleanly again. In many homes, especially where residential gate security matters most, a poorly seated latch can leave the gate looking closed while still not securing properly. When wear is too advanced, gate lock replacement becomes the safer choice, particularly if rust, broken components, or repeated sticking have already compromised performance.
In other cases, fresh gate lock installation is the right answer when old hardware is no longer compatible with the gate frame or has been fitted too lightly for daily use. A Sandton gate locksmith also looks at the surrounding structure, because gate latch problems are often caused by movement in the posts or changes in the gateβs swing, not just the lock itself. That targeted approach is very different from a house lockout call, where the focus is access rather than hardware condition; it also differs from a 24 hour locksmith visit that may deal with many lock types, or a car lockout that involves an entirely separate set of mechanisms. For homeowners comparing options, the goal is to restore a gate that closes firmly, locks smoothly, and supports reliable security over time.
