First: Is This a Lockout, or an Intrusion?

This is the most important thirty seconds of the whole situation, and it costs nothing.

Look at the door and the frame before you touch either. Splintered timber near the keep. A lock cylinder sitting at an angle or hanging. Bright scratch marks around the keyway that were not there this morning. A door standing fractionally open when you know you locked it.

Then look wider. A bent burglar bar. A window that is broken, or open when it should not be. A gate that is unlatched. Any of those, in combination with a door that will not behave normally, changes the situation entirely.

If you see any of it: move away from the property, call the police and your armed response, and only then call a locksmith. What you need at that point is the property secured after they have cleared it — not a door opened while somebody may still be behind it. Where to Wait, and How to Be Found

Assuming it is an ordinary lockout, the next thing to settle is where you are standing for the next twenty to thirty minutes. After dark that is a real consideration rather than a polite one.

A lit, visible, populated spot beats your own driveway. A neighbour's lounge is better than a gate. A filling station or a security guardhouse is better than a dark verge. Sitting in your own car with the doors locked is better than standing beside it. If you are alone, tell somebody where you are and that a technician is on the way.

Then make yourself findable, because that is where the minutes actually go. Street numbers are close to invisible at night, so an outside light is worth more than a detailed description, and a phone torch held up as a van comes down the road ends the search instantly.

Proving You Live There at Eleven at Night

Nobody is let into a house without establishing that they belong in it, and the awkwardness of doing that after hours is not a reason to skip it.

The usual proof is identification with an address matching the property, or a utility bill, or a lease. The obvious problem is that all three are frequently inside the house you cannot get into — which is the situation, not an unusual complication.

Say that on the phone rather than at the door. There are other routes and they are used constantly: a neighbour who can vouch for you, a landlord or managing agent reachable by phone, an estate's own resident register, a rates or municipal account you can open on your phone, a delivery history showing the address.

From the Call to Being Inside

Five steps. The first two are yours, and one of them frequently ends the job at no cost.

1. Step 1

   You check the door itself

   For marks, splintering, a hanging cylinder or a bent bar. That single look decides whether this is a locksmith call or a police one.

2. Step 2

   You walk the property

   Back door, scullery, garage side door, any window on the latch. A real share of these end here, before anybody is charged.

3. Step 3

   Risk and access are established

   Anybody shut inside, how exposed you are, and whether a boom or manned gate stands between the technician and your door.

4. Step 4

   Residence is worked out

   During the call rather than argued about on a doorstep. Neighbours, agents, estate registers and rates accounts all work.

5. Step 5

   Opened, and closed out honestly

   Non-destructive entry wherever the lock allows. Where the hardware was fine and you were simply locked out, nothing is sold to you.

Locked Out, or Locked In by a Failed Lock

There is a version of this that is not about keys at all, and it is more common after hours than people expect.

A key that has snapped off in the door. A multi-point mechanism that has jammed with the door shut. A handle that has sheared so the key turns and nothing moves. In each case the key is in your hand and the door still will not open.

That is a mechanical failure rather than a lockout, and it needs the mechanism dealt with rather than the door opened. Almost all of these gave warning. A key that needed jiggling. A handle needing a firmer lift each month. A gate latch that had to be pulled while turning. Two Minutes That Sometimes End the Call

Before anybody is dispatched there is a short list worth checking, and it resolves a genuine share of lockouts at no cost at all.

Walk the perimeter properly. A scullery door, a garage side door, a back door behind a screen or a window on a latch — households routinely forget which of their own openings were left unsecured, particularly on a property with four or five ways in.

If there is a gate involved, check whether the supply has tripped rather than assuming the motor has failed, and check whether somebody used the manual override recently and left it in manual. Both give every appearance of something broken while nothing is.

If the lock is electronic and unresponsive, find out whether it has a mechanical override — nearly every serious product does, usually a concealed keyway or an external power contact — because locating it in the handbook is faster than a callout.

What is not worth doing is forcing anything. The damage from an improvised attempt reliably exceeds the callout it was meant to avoid, and a bent frame or a broken slider is a considerably larger job than a locked door.

If none of that resolves it, the call stands. Being asked to check first is the cheapest possible outcome for the person calling, which is why it is worth asking.
