Which Locksmith Service You Actually Need

People book the wrong service constantly, and it is almost always because the names do not describe the jobs.

The Trade's Names Do Not Map Onto the Problems People Have

The names this trade uses do not map well onto the problems people actually have. Somebody books a lock change when they need a rekey, a lockout when they need a replacement, or a locksmith when they need an automation company. Our residential locksmith calls start by working out which of six things is genuinely wanted.

This article is a plain guide to those six, what each one is actually for, and how to tell which applies to you — across Sandton, Fourways and Bryanston, where the property types differ but the services do not.

Read the symptom column rather than the name, and it usually becomes obvious.

Not sure what you need?

Describe the symptom rather than the service. Call or send a WhatsApp message and it gets placed on the call.

Repair, Rekey and Replace Are Three Different Things

These three cover the majority of domestic work and they are constantly confused, which is expensive in one direction and useless in the other.

A repair is for a lock that still works but works badly — stiff, needing a wiggle, working at one angle only. The mechanism is stripped, cleaned, worn parts replaced and correctly lubricated. That is what a locksmith for lock repair visit does, and it restores a great many mechanisms people were told to replace.

A rekey is for a lock that works perfectly where the problem is who holds keys — a departure, a move-in, a lost set. The cylinder is reconfigured so every existing key stops working, and the hardware stays in the door. Our locksmith for lock rekey page covers exactly when this is the right instrument.

A replacement is for a lock that is worn past repair, has been forced, or was never suited to the door. It is the most expensive of the three and it is right in fewer situations than it is sold in — which our lock replacement page sets out as three specific cases.

Emergency, Installation and Commercial

The other three, and the ones most often booked under the wrong name.

An emergency callout is for getting in, or for making a property secure that currently cannot be locked. It is not a hardware purchase, and a lockout that routinely ends in a new lock is a sales pattern rather than a technical necessity — the point our locksmith for home lockout page keeps making.

An installation is for an opening that has no lock, or no adequate one — a garage-to-house door on a latch, a slider with only a catch, a gate that was never secured. This is where most security money should go and where it usually does not, which our locksmith for lock installation assessments exist to correct.

And commercial work is a different discipline rather than a bigger version of domestic work: authority before the door, alarm sequences, key registers and access levels. Our commercial locksmith page covers why a business call has questions a household call does not.

Rekey or Replace: the Decision Most Often Got Wrong

These two are confused more than any other pair, and the difference is money.

 RekeyReplace
What changesThe pin heights inside the cylinder. Every existing key stops working; the lock stays in the door. The entire lock comes off and a new one goes on, with new keys.
When it is rightThe hardware works and the problem is who holds keys — a move-in, a departure, a lost set.The lock is worn past repair, has been forced, or was never suited to the door.
Several doors on one keyStraightforward during the same visit, and much cheaper than doing it later.Possible, but you are buying hardware you may not have needed.
Relative costMaterially less, because sound hardware is retained.More, and justified only where the lock itself is the problem.

If somebody has quoted a replacement and none of the three replacement cases apply, that is worth questioning before committing — which our locksmith for lock change in Sandton page treats as the normal starting point rather than an awkward question.

Locked out right now?

That is the emergency service, and it should not end in a hardware purchase. Typical response is 20 to 30 minutes.

The Six Services

What each is for, in one line.

Why the Wrong Service Gets Booked So Often

It is worth saying that this is not anybody being careless. The names genuinely do not describe the jobs.

Lock change sounds like it covers everything from a stiff key to a break-in. Locksmith sounds like it covers gate motors and alarms. Emergency sounds like anything inconvenient. None of those readings are unreasonable, and each of them puts a technician on the road with the wrong expectation.

The fix is entirely on the phone rather than in the terminology. Describe what you can see and what happens when you try the key, and the service places itself — which is why our locksmith for lock repair in Sandton calls ask for the symptom before anything else.

It also protects you. A job accurately described is a job accurately quoted, and a technician arriving with the right equipment is one who finishes on the visit — the standard our 24 hour locksmith in Sandton work is held to at every hour.

How To Place Your Own Problem

Five questions, in order. They land on the right service almost every time.

  1. Step 1

Can the property be locked right now?

If no, that is an emergency regardless of what caused it. If yes, everything else can be scheduled.

  2. Step 2

    Are you outside it?

If yes and the lock works, that is an emergency callout and nothing further should be required afterwards.

  3. Step 3

Does the lock work badly rather than not at all?

Stiff, wiggly, one angle only. That is a repair, and it is the cheapest moment you will get.

  4. Step 4

Is the hardware fine and the key count unknown?

    A move-in, a departure, a lost set. That is a rekey, not a replacement.

  5. Step 5

Does the opening have no adequate lock at all?

A latch on a garage door, a catch on a slider, nothing on a gate. That is an installation.

What Is Not a Locksmith Service

Four things booked as locksmith work that are not, and knowing saves a callout.

Estate tags and remotes
Issued and cancelled by the estate or body corporate office, usually within minutes. Nothing at your door affects them.
Gate and garage motors
A motor that hums and does not move is automation. The lock, the manual release and anything keyed are ours.
Alarm panels and access controllers
The electronic side is a different trade. The strike, the maglock and the mechanical lock behind them are ours.
Burglar bars
A barrier rather than a lock, although the hinged escape section on a barred window usually does carry one.

Stiff, will not turn, key snapped, nothing on the door. Call or send a WhatsApp message and the right service follows.

What Each Choice Costs in Time

Booking the wrong service is rarely expensive in money. It is expensive in time, and it is worth seeing where the time actually goes.

Booking a replacement where a repair was needed costs a technician arriving with parts, establishing that the door is misaligned rather than the lock failed, and correcting the alignment — which is the good outcome, and it still means you were quoted for hardware you did not require.

Booking a repair where a rekey was needed is worse, because nothing is wrong with the lock and there is nothing to repair. The visit establishes that the problem is the list of people who can open the door, and the actual work then has to be scoped afresh.

Booking an emergency callout for something that was not urgent costs the after-hours element of the call-out for a job that would have been the same price on Thursday morning.

And booking nothing at all, because the fault comes and goes and never quite justifies a call, is the most expensive of the four — it converts a repair into a replacement and a scheduled visit into a callout at an unsociable hour.

Which Trade Does Which Job

A meaningful share of misdirected calls are not the wrong locksmith service. They are the wrong trade entirely, and being clear about the boundaries saves the time that mattered.

Alarm systems belong with the alarm company: a panel that will not disarm, a sensor triggering repeatedly, a zone that refuses to clear. A locksmith attending will say so rather than charge to establish it.

Gate motors are automation. If the motor runs while the gate stays put, or nothing happens with power present, that is a gate company's work. What remains locksmith work is the lock on the gate, the pedestrian gate beside it and the manual override — which is the part that matters during an outage.

Broken glass needs a glazier, although an opening can be secured temporarily so a property is not left standing open. Access control credentials — tags, fobs, intercoms, booms — are administered by whoever runs that system; the mechanical door behind a reader is locksmith work and the credential is not.

And on vehicles, anything requiring the car to be lifted, dismantled or taken into a workshop sits with a workshop, as does a small group of recent models where the manufacturer restricts key data tightly.

Choosing a Service — Questions We Get Asked

Is it worth calling at all for something that comes and goes?+

Yes, and it is the cheapest call anybody makes. An intermittent fault is the one nobody books, which is precisely how it becomes permanent — the mechanism is spending its remaining clearance the whole time it is being tolerated. Attended while it is still occasional it is an adjustment or a service; attended after it stops entirely it is a replacement and usually a callout at an awkward hour.

Can a locksmith tell me which service I need over the phone?+

Usually to within one category, which is enough to bring the right things. Describing what happens when you try — does the key turn with the door open, does it fight when closed, is anything wrong with the mechanism at all — narrows it to repair, rekey or replace before anybody travels. What cannot be settled remotely is the condition of the hardware, which is why the diagnosis happens at the door.

Which jobs are not locksmith jobs at all?+

Alarm panels and sensors, gate motors, glazing, and access control credentials — each a separate trade. On vehicles, anything needing lifting, dismantling or a workshop. Being told that on the phone is more useful than being charged for a visit that establishes it, and the registration settles the vehicle question before anybody travels.

What does booking the wrong service cost?+

Time rather than money, mostly. A replacement booked where a repair was needed means being quoted for hardware you did not require. A repair booked where a rekey was needed means a visit that establishes there is nothing to repair. And booking nothing at all, because the fault comes and goes, converts a repair into a replacement.

How do I know which service I need?+

Ask one question: is something wrong with the lock, or with the list of people who can open it. If the second — a purchase, a tenant, a staff departure, a lost bunch, the end of a renovation — that is a rekey and buying hardware solves nothing. If the first, the next question is whether the fault is alignment, contamination or genuine wear.

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing?+

Rekeying changes the pin heights inside the cylinder so every existing key stops working, while the lock stays in the door. Replacing removes the whole lock and fits a new one. Rekeying is right when the hardware works and the problem is who holds keys; replacing is right when the lock is worn past repair, has been forced, or was never suited to the door.

I am locked out. Will I need a new lock afterwards?+

Usually not, and you should be wary of being told otherwise. A door pulled shut with the keys inside means the lock is working perfectly — that is precisely why you are outside. Once entry is achieved nothing further is required. A lockout that routinely ends in a hardware purchase is a sales pattern rather than a technical necessity.

My lock is stiff. Is that a repair or a replacement?+

Almost always a repair, and now is the cheapest moment. Stiffness is wear or contamination, and a strip, clean, parts replacement and correct lubrication restores a great many mechanisms. Left until it seizes, the same lock becomes a lockout, a callout and frequently a replacement — three charges instead of one.

The door has to be shouldered to lock. Which service is that?+

None of the six. Lock the door while it is standing open: if the key turns smoothly then and fights you when closed, the lock is not the problem. The door has moved relative to the frame and the bolt no longer meets the keep. That is an alignment correction, and no new hardware will fix it.

Can a locksmith help with my gate motor or estate tag?+

Not usually. A motor that hums and does not move is automation rather than a lock fault, although the manual release and anything keyed are ours. Estate tags, remotes and facility cards are issued and cancelled by the estate or body corporate office, and nothing done at your door affects them in either direction.

Do the services differ between Sandton, Fourways and Bryanston?+

The services are identical; the mix is not. Fourways runs to estates and complexes, where rekeying and access dominate. Bryanston runs to large stands, where installation and perimeter work dominate. Sandton spans both plus offices and blocks. What changes is which service you need most, not what each one is.
