A Car Door That Will Not Unlock Has Two Separate Causes
A door that will not unlock has two entirely separate possible causes, and our automotive locksmith technicians separate them before quoting because the difference is substantial.
The first is the lock barrel β the mechanical part the key goes into. Worn wafers, accumulated grit, a bent or worn key, or a barrel that has been forced at some point.
The second is the actuator: a small electric motor inside the door that physically drives the locking rod when the remote is pressed. When that fails the barrel is perfectly healthy, the door still will not respond, and replacing the lock achieves nothing at all. The One-Minute Test You Can Run Yourself
This costs nothing, needs no tools, and it tells you which of two very differently priced jobs you are looking at.
Stand at the car and press the remote while listening at each door in turn. A working actuator makes a distinct clunk as the motor drives the rod. Silence at one door while the others clunk means the motor inside that door has failed, and no amount of work on the barrel will help it.
Then try the key by hand in that same door. If the key turns freely and the door still does not release, again the fault is inside the door rather than in the lock you are holding the key in.
If instead the key is stiff, needs jiggling, or works in one door and not another, that is the barrel and it is usually repairable. Why Car Barrels Wear Faster Than House Locks
A car lock lives in about the worst environment a lock can be given, and understanding that explains the failure pattern completely.
It sits in the outside skin of a door, exposed to rain, road salt, dust and every high-pressure car wash the vehicle has ever been through. Water gets into the keyway and takes grit with it. Unlike a house lock, there is nowhere for it to drain to.
The wafers inside are small and lightly sprung β considerably lighter than the pins in a domestic cylinder β and they wear against a key that is itself wearing. Add thermal cycling in a metal door panel and the tolerances drift.
Which produces the classic progression: the driver's door becomes stiff first, because it is used far more than the others, and eventually the key that still works perfectly in the passenger door refuses in the one you actually use. What the Symptom Points At

One door silent on the remote
The actuator motor inside that door. The barrel is healthy and replacing it changes nothing at all.
Key turns freely, door stays locked
Also inside the door β the linkage or the actuator rather than the lock the key is turning.
Key stiff in the driver's door only
Normal wear. That door does several times the cycles of any other, so its barrel wears first. Usually resettable.
Key snapped in the door
The barrel behind it was already worn. Leave the broken half where it is β pushing it deeper makes extraction much harder.
Boot lock seized solid
Because it has not been turned by key in four years. Locks that are never used seize precisely because they are never used.
Lock damaged after a break-in attempt
Punched, drilled or levered. The sheet metal around it is usually deformed too, and both need assessing together.
After an Attempted Theft
This is a distinct case and it is treated differently from wear.
A lock that has been punched, drilled, levered or gripped is damaged internally even where a key still turns in it, and the surrounding sheet metal is almost always deformed as well. Fitting a new barrel into a distorted door skin gives a lock that works today and binds within months.
So both get assessed. Where the door has been forced, the alignment of the lock housing matters as much as the barrel going into it, and that is part of the job rather than an extra.

How a Repair Visit Runs

The Locks People Never Use Until They Have To
The vehicle locks that fail most completely are the ones that are never operated, and preventing that costs nothing at all.

- Four years of remote-only operation and it will be seized solid the first morning the remote does not answer. Turning it by key once or twice a year prevents it entirely.
- The fuel flap release
- Same failure, same cause, and it is discovered at a forecourt with a queue behind you. Thirty seconds a year is the whole prevention.
- Rear door barrels
- On a family car these are almost never used by key. They seize quietly and are discovered during exactly the situation you needed them for.
- The spare key you keep in a drawer
- Worth actually using twice a year, both to keep the barrel free and to confirm the key still works before you need it to.

- A seized barrel can usually be recovered, but not always. The prevention is free and the cure is a callout.

When a door will not open or will not lock, the fault is as often in the linkage between the handle and the latch as in either component.
Inside a door skin the exterior handle, the interior handle, the lock barrel and the central locking actuator all connect to a single latch, through a set of rods, cables and plastic clips. Those clips are the weak link by design β they are the cheap, replaceable part β and they perish, slip or break after enough years of heat and vibration.
The symptoms are distinctive once you know them. A handle that moves with no resistance at all and does nothing has usually come adrift from its rod. A door that opens from the inside but not the outside, or the reverse, is a single linkage rather than a lock. And a lock button that operates while the door stays unlocked is an actuator turning against nothing.
The useful thing about all of these is that they are repairs rather than replacements. The latch is generally fine, the barrel is generally fine, and what is needed is access to the inside of the door and the correct clip or rod refitted.

Signs Your Car Lock Needs Repair
A car lock repair visit makes sense when the fault is in the mechanism itself, not just the fact that the vehicle cannot be opened. If the barrel feels gritty, the latch only works after several attempts, the key wonβt seat properly, or the door needs to be lifted while you turn the lock, the problem is usually wear, damage, or misalignment inside the assembly.
